.....Well this is an exciting
prospect... a little scary too! More than a little, because I have not ever traveled and explored on my own.
.....Lots of experience being the passenger though. Navigation and map skills, plus reading the street signs... that's been my forte. But I'm
alone now. (Read more about it at
"My Widow's Walk")

.....This is a whole new thing for me. Yet.... never fear! I have a friend, and he gives me confidence. He will help me if I get lost (which I will, as past experience shows), patiently talk me through my mistakes, misunderstandings, and miscalculations.
....."Who is this wonderful helper?" you ask. [continued at right - "Wonderful Helper???"]

As The Crow Flies...

Today I headed for a particular store in a factory outlet mall in the East Valley. And although I had a good idea of where it was, I chose to take Mr. Gee along. So I keyed in the address, hopped in the car, turned on Mr. Gee, and saw a very strange route highlighted on the map. Hmmm... that sure didn't look right, and Mr. Gee wasn't saying a word!

Oh no... don't tell me the GPS is as directionally challenged as I am! So I unplugged him, and re-did everything for the store's location. But when I powered up the GPS again... same thing. All I saw on the map was a diagonal line connecting my home to my desired location, sticking to no streets at all... that line just crossed over streets and buildings... as the crow flies!

So I turned him off, and just drove there without help. But once there in the correct parking lot, I again looked into the situation and finally discovered that somehow the 'off road' option had been chosen, showing me how to "hike cross-country" or "fly like the crow" to the store. Once that setting was corrected, all was well and I had no further mysterious routes to follow. So the joke's on me... but I continue to learn, and always am pleased to figure out what went wrong and why.

Coming back home, Mr. Gee did a fine job. I got more practice driving the freeway, and that's a very good thing.
